Somewhere in the Middle
A journey to the Philippines in search of roots, belonging, and identity
DEBORAH FRANCISCO DOUGLAS
Coming Spring 2019
Half Filipino but raised in an American household, Deborah Francisco Douglas had always longed to know more about her Filipino heritage. So when a thick government-issued envelope arrived at her door announcing her assignment to the Philippines as a Peace Corps Volunteer, she snatched the opportunity and set out on a journey of self-discovery, travel, and adventure. A Memoir on Filipino American Identity
In my memoir, I explore the concept of Filipino American identity. It’s a different story from most Filipino American narratives since I don’t focus on the typical immigrant experience (i.e. moving to America, adjusting to an American culture, learning English, etc). Although I do recount how my dad’s family came to the United States, the focus is more on being a second generation Filipino American who has never grown up with Filipino culture, leading to a journey to the Philippines to learn more about my Filipino heritage.
By the end of my journey, I had a clearer sense of my own identity and where I belonged in the midst of two cultures.
“My hope is that …my memoir will offer inspiration for anyone wishing to learn more about their family roots and discover who they are in the process.”
My hope is that whether you define yourself as Filipino American, mixed-race, multicultural, ethnically ambiguous, “it depends on the day”, or you’re just not sure, my memoir will offer inspiration for anyone wishing to learn more about their family roots and discover who they are in the process.

Why Did You Choose the Title Somewhere in the Middle?
This book has gone through many different titles. I started off completely set on the (what I thought was a hilarious) title Have You Eaten Yet? And Other Ways to Say Hello in Filipino, taken from one of my popular blog posts with the same name. I thought it perfectly captured the essence of Filipino culture and made people laugh when they read it.
Unfortunately, because the title was about eating, most people who read earlier drafts assumed that my memoir would then be a food memoir or recipe book with stories. I didn’t want to mislead readers. It was definitely not a cookbook.
“My memoir focuses on the theme of being caught in the middle…”
I am a mix of different ethnicities and after living in the Philippines as a Filipino American I have often felt like I belong in the middle of many cultures. My memoir focuses on the theme of being caught in the middle of two different worlds, and I wanted to make sure readers saw that right away.
I finally chose Somewhere in the Middle because when you’re in-between cultures, you’re never really dead center but always wavering back and forth depending on the day. Sometimes identity can be a fluid and changing concept and I thought that Somewhere in the Middle captures captures that feeling.
